Hold On Tight Here I Go!

The biggest nugget that I took away from the reading is as Dervin writes, "Sense-making is individualistic in its focus because it acknowledges that individual humans are the carriers of communicative action, the acts by which meaning is made and systems are energized". What we as humans need to make sense of our lives is what systems will try to provide in order to make themselves desirable and relevant. Unfortunately what humans may need is always changing and is dependent on many changing variables.
If I was to teach this reading to a high schooler I would try doing it backwards. i would have them take a survey and have them stop and think about the different reasons they chose the response they did and why. Once they have had time to reflect I will have them take this reading in sections. I would make sure to have images like the ones I have posted here that helped me understand the reading. I would also have them watch the video Sensemaking by ADOT&PF, published on Jun 7, 2015 linked below. www.youtube.com/watch?v=slx_YF1lP1gg Providing different forms of media helps students process the material in different ways. Watching the video and looking at images that broke it down as a process helped me visually understand in order to make sense of it.

I like the graphic you chose, and how it connects with what you said about systems trying to adapt to a constantly changing world. It can seems like an impossible task sometimes to adapt to our teaching to the constantly changing world around us. Reading your blog reminded me of making connections with students to engage them in learning and making learning relevant to them. When a context that interests them is provided sometimes making sense of information that is new becomes a lot simpler for our students. I had a lot of similar thoughts as you while reading Dervin's text, but thanks for the new ones!

I truly appreciate your ideas about how to teach this reading to high school students. I believe that your backwards planning in regards to beginning with a survey, would absolutely be beneficial for students in not only providing a hook into the reading, but also as a way to ensure prior knowledge, as well as, establish previous connections to the content. The knowledge of and planning in accordance to connections, prior knowledge, and relevancy to individual student lives are all essential factors in being able to provide an education that meets the needs of every individual/learner in our classrooms. Just as Dervin explained, we must consistently consider and revolve around the, "actor" and not the "observer." What prior knowledge and experiences do you feel you brought with you to the reading that made the most significant impact on what you took from it? Thank you so much for all of your wonderful ideas!
