Response to Teaching in a Competency-Based Education Environment by Katie Varatta Competency-based learning and personalized learning can be supported by educational technology in the following ways: 1. Chromebooks- are a tool each child could have in the classroom or share with another student. Students could use this technology to read or be read to at their level by visiting online platforms that provide a copious amount of books online. 2.Google classroom- would be a great tool for this type of individualized learning because the students have access to the work in advance and they can work at their own pace. Google classroom would simplify creating and grading assignments. 3.Google Forms- can be used to automate quizzes, check-ins and exit tickets. 4. Flipped Classroom- this teaching model uses technology to provide lectures in video format to the students that may watch them from home. The classroom is then set aside for 1on 1 help and discussion and individualized help. 5. Glogster- allows students to make a collage with pictures, video, graphics and text to create fun and appealing presentations they can share with the class. These are just a few ways educational technology can help support Competency-based learning. I have been using Chromebooks in my 4th grade classroom for about a month now and both the students and I have found it to be an easy way to turn in their book reviews. I am able to assign each students books at their own level. I am also excited about using Google forms in the classroom to quickly assess student knowledge on leveled questions.
