Hold On Tight Here I Go!

The purpose of this study was to use a technology tool and program to engage students in reading and therefore improve participation in class. The research aims to gain further insight into whether using an online source like TumbleBooks as a strategy during SSR will help students actively engage in reading increasing their success at answering a writing prompt.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS The research question is: How will students engage with TumbleBooks on chromebooks for independent reading? The main goal in this research was to find an alternative way to engage students in silent sustained reading. Sub-questions include: What is the impact of incorporating technology in SSR? How does online reading affect comprehension? How does online reading impact students’ journal response? For my research I used both quantitative and qualitative data collection tools. I used the Reading Inventory test as a pre/post assessment and I used a Reading Response Journal as my qualitative collection tool. The RI measured student comprehension of grade level text while the journal served as a tool to measure engagement with the reading on the TunbleBooks online platform I used through the Napa Public Library.

I like the idea of a reading response journal. Did you notice any changes in their writing after using Tumblebooks? This sounds like something that I could incorporate in my classroom as well...

I'm curious to know what impact your project study had on student interest in reading. We know how important reading to learn is in fourth grade, did you notice a difference on interest as well as engagement during SSR?
